Packing a Kitchen the Right Way: Pots, Pans and Pantry

19 April 2026 6 min read

Properly packing your kitchen is crucial for a smooth and stress-free move. This guide covers how to pack everything from delicate dishes to bulky pots and pans, ensuring your culinary essentials arrive safely at your new home.

When it comes to moving, the kitchen often presents the biggest packing challenge. With its array of fragile items, oddly shaped utensils, and pantry staples, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. However, with a systematic approach, you can ensure everything from your grandmother's china to your everyday mugs makes it to your new home in Nottingham safe and sound.

Start by decluttering your pantry. Dispose of any expired food items, open packets, or things you simply won’t use. This is a great opportunity to lighten your load and avoid moving unnecessary items, which can save you time and space when unpacking in your new East Midlands home.

For your dishes, plates, and bowls, use sturdy moving boxes. Wrap each item individually in packing paper, paying extra attention to the corners and edges. Place them vertically in the box rather than stacking them flat; this can actually prevent breakages during transit across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, or Leicestershire.

Pots, pans, and other cookware are more durable but still require careful packing. Use packing paper or bubble wrap to cushion them, and you can nest smaller pans inside larger ones to save space. Fill any gaps in the box with crumpled paper to prevent shifting, which is key for a secure journey with M&I Removals.

When packing glasses and mugs, treat each one as a fragile item. Wrap them individually and place them in specially designed partitioned boxes if you can. If not, create your own partitions with cardboard or use plenty of packing paper to keep them separate and secure.

Don’t forget your kitchen appliances. Make sure they are clean, dry, and unplugged. For smaller appliances like microwaves or toasters, pack them in their original boxes if you still have them. If not, wrap them well in bubble wrap and use a sturdy box, filling any empty spaces.

Finally, keep an essential box for your kitchen. This should contain items you’ll need immediately upon arrival, such as a kettle, some mugs, tea and coffee, a basic pan, and some cutlery. This thoughtful preparation will make that first morning in your new home much more comfortable and prevent you from rummaging through endless boxes after a long day of moving around the East Midlands.
